Each fortnight for the six months until the end of 2013, I will be doing a series of short posts titled ‘Swap This’. These posts will be centred around ways to make little changes by using alternative products to reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill. I hope to show you that there are other options to buying over packaged goods and maybe you will save a little money too!
I came up with a fantastic idea one day and it was going to make Mr T and I rich beyond our wildest dreams. I put my fantastic idea to Mr T which was, “What if we designed a sultana container that could be re-used instead of using the little cardboard boxes that only a have certain lifetime before they just become too tatty and don’t actually hold sultanas anymore?” I was certain it was such a great idea that sultana companies would be desperately wanting to pick it up and include it with all their sultana packs and again, “We would be rich beyond our wildest dreams!” Our sultana containers would be the new Crocs, everyone would want one. But, Mr T is a bit wiser than me and gently told me that the sultana companies wanted you to keep buying the tatty cardboard ones, wrapped nicely in plastic. Once people had a reusable sultana container they would go back to buying the sultanas the old fashioned way, in a bulk bag. “Oh….” My dreams came crashing down, we would not be rich beyond our wildest dreams. Although I did have a second idea which wasn’t quite as grand but would be just as effective. Use my own reusable container and buy a bulk bag of sultanas. It also solves the problem of no more empty sultana packs in the back of the car.
WARNING: It does not solve the problem of sultanas being squished into car seats – I can’t help you there.
Treat Disclaimer: Yes, I did go against everything I believe in and bought these packaged items which I have tried to turn my back on since the start of the year. My defence is that it was in the name of research and photography. I will add, the day I bought all of these ‘treats’ we ended up having one of our “harder” days at home with Miss Logical and Master Mayhem screaming for small packages of goodies and me trying in vain to ration them out all the while feeling dirty for buying them. Please don’t judge me!
