Creative Gift Ideas – Cake-In-A-Mug-In-A-Jar

How adorable is this!

After my success of the Cookies-In-A-Jar gift idea it got me thinking about the same kind of gift but on a smaller scale.

I remembered a recipe for a chocolate-cake-in-a-mug which I received years ago in one of those random emails you get. You know the type, you file it in ‘Recipes’ or ‘Try this’ or worse ‘Miscellaneous’ with the thought that one day you’ll try that… but you never do.

Well, today I did try it and it was amazing! (I was going to say awesome! But I’m starting to feel that word is a bit overused, plus Master Mayhem and Miss Logical use it alot, so should I, as their parent, not therefore be using it?)

I digress…

What is a Cake-In-A-Mug?

It is just that, a miniature cake with just enough ingredients to fit in a mug that you then cook in the microwave for three minutes. Dangerously easy…

So what if you were able to put Cake-In-A-Mug in a jar?

Then you would have a fantastic gift idea called Cake-In-A-Mug-In-A-Jar of course!

Read on for how to create this very cute, very easy, very tasty gift complete with downloadable instruction tag.

Ingredients
4 tablespoons flour
2 tablespoons cocoa
4 tablespoons sugar
3 tablespoons chocolate chips
1 x jar (capable of holding around 250ml or 1 cup)
Scrap of material, rubber band, twine for decoration

Directions

  1. Spoon the flour into the jar and pat down firmly (if you can find a utensil that’s long enough to fit in the jar)
  2. Spoon the cocoa in gently

  3. Spoon the sugar in (I used raw sugar which stood out a bit better)

  4. Add the choc chips gently on top. (I used the rest of the block of Cadbury’s Dairy Milk that was leftover from the Cookies-In-A-Jar and found that one block is exactly enough for one big gift and one little gift)
  5. You should have just the right amount of ingredients to fill to the top of your jar. Put the lid on.
  6. Find a piece of fabric you think will suit and cut into a square. I found it’s best to cut it big and then trim with a pair of pinking shears. Attach with a rubber band and then cover the rubber band with some twine which you can then attach your directions to

To make it a bit simpler I’ve created a downloadable template with the ingredients of the jar and directions for the gift recipient for you to print off and attach to the jar.

To complete the gift you could include a mug and a couple of spoons.

Enjoy!
