I’ve been looking back over the past year, trying not to be too harsh on myself, and have come up with a few things I did well in my sustainable living quest, but also some areas that could still do with a little work.
Things I did well
I definitely cut back on the amount of meat I was eating. This wasn’t that hard while researching the effects that eating meat has on the environment and having my eyes opened to factory farming.
I chose more organic and free-range products and bought as local as I could.
Miss Logical starting school has meant a more concentrated effort to continue my reduction of packaging waste I find myself churning out homemade pumpkin scones, cakes and biscuits at an alarming rate for recess but I know it is worth it.
I was a lot braver with my gift-giving once I made the conscious decision to give second-hand gifts and explain why with a gift tag.
The organization of my gift giving went well but I did still fall down sometimes when I couldn’t find what I was looking for.
I have enjoyed changing my mindset in regards to fixing things and definitely take more care with my belongings.
Things I could do better
Knowing what I know now about meat, I could easily consume even less. I need to find more vegetarian options for 2014.
I don’t feel like I really ‘cracked’ the seasonal food thing. I cut out things that weren’t seasonal but I didn’t really add things that were seasonal and I just hadn’t tried before.
My food waste physical challenge went terribly and this needs a lot more thought and organisation to keep an eye on just how much food we are wasting.
I need to have more go-to eco-shopping options for gift giving when my second hand gift giving with pride quest falls down.
While I have improved my recycling habits, there are still some things I’m not getting right a hundred per cent.
The overwhelmingly positive thing that has come through this year was being able to share all of these things out loud and finding that I wasn’t alone. That there are a lot of people out there all concerned about changes in our environment but not sure where to start.
Thanks to everyone who has been reading, kept me going with positive comments and opening up lots of conversations with ideas for a little change in our lives.
How did you go this year? Do you have anything you want to change for next year?
Oh, and Happy New Year for 2014.
