“When asked if I am pessimistic or optimistic about the future, my answer is always the same: if you look at the science about what is happening on earth and aren’t pessimistic, you don’t understand the data. But if you meet the people who are working to restore this earth and the lives of the poor, and you aren’t optimistic, you haven’t got a pulse.”
Martin Keogh – Hope Beneath Our Feet: Restoring Our Place in the Natural World

The above quote sums up my daily thoughts in regards to our future.

There are days I’m filled with doom over the hopelessness of it all and there are days I’m filled with hope, knowing there are people out there driving positive change.

I’ve decided it’s better to be one of the positive change people.

By leaving behind the worry and guilt of imagining how our lifestyle might be affecting the world and instead working towards truly understanding how our lifestyle is affecting the world, I hope to uncover simple lifestyle changes to ensure our feelings about the future can be nothing but optimistic.

In a bid to keep the overwhelming ‘filled-with-doom’ feeling to a minimum, my focus will be on the simple things in life we can control.

  • Food we eat
What and how we choose to eat is one area we can have the greatest impact. Local, free-range, organic, Australian owned, genetically-modified, pesticide free, it can all get pretty confusing. We need to understand what choices we have and what changes we can make.
  • Stuff we buy
As consumers the world is driven by what we want and the choices we make. The things we demand are what suppliers will produce so it’s up to us to demand the right things. We need to understand what stuff we should be saying no to and what alternatives we should be demanding.
  • Things we do
How we live our lives and the actions we take all has an impact on the world around us. Life can get pretty fast sometimes; we need to maintain a more thoughtful approach to living, one that works for each individual.

While any changes we make may only be small, the overall impact has the potential to be huge and the more people actively making positive change, the results will be that much sweeter.

Our lifestyle shouldn’t cost the earth, we may only need ‘A Little Change’.

A Bit About Me

My name is Bernadette Eden, Bernie to people who know it’s not short for Bernard.

I am fortunate enough to live in the Adelaide Foothills and be happily married to a man who I will aptly name Mr T, not because he says things like “I pity the fool,” or “Quit yo jibber jabber!” (although wouldn’t it be cool if he did?!) but because he is my solid and quietly goes along with any crazy ideas I put to him….this being one of them.

We are also lucky enough to be blessed with a daughter, Little Miss Logical who at age 4 is way too smart for me and a son, Master Mayhem who at age 2 keeps me in check that life is about embracing chaos.

I work three days a week doing admin work and enjoy what I do but yes, if we won lotto I would be out of there in a shot.

Total decadence for me would be eating cake, drinking tea and watching ‘Bold and the Beautiful’ all at the same time… this never happens, it is a fantasy.
